In 2017 workforce mental health issues cost UK employers almost £35 billion according to research published by Centre for Mental Health – the equivalent of £1,300 for every employee in the UK economy. The research showed that largest contributor to business cost was reduced productivity among people who are at work but unwell: or ‘presenteeism’.

A UK Government report issued at around the same time suggested the business cost figure to be nearer £42bn. Analysis by Deloitte, revealed a demonstrable cost to employers, and quantified for the first time how investing in supporting mental health at work is good for business and productivity. Evaluations of workplace interventions show a return to business of between £1.50 and £9 for every £1 invested.

As a result of the research the UK Government is encouraging businesses to adopt 6 key initiatives that will better support all employees including those with poor mental health or well being to remain in and thrive at work. One suggestion was the creation of an online health and well being portal to help employers access the tools and guidance they need.
